Introduction to Working on Site Content

One of the main features of Joomla is that it is a sophisticated website system that you can update yourself.

Webpages In Joomla are called Articles and they can be updated online using the online Article Editor. In addition to text and images, you can add videos, Flash, and other multimedia content. With a little practice you should be able to create great looking pages with the content you want.

In Joomla v1.0 webpages are called Content Items, not Articles.

However... Not All Webpages Are Articles

In Joomla, think of a "webpage" as the output that is displayed on the screen. When a site visitor clicks on a menu link, Joomla creates the webpage you see from a variety of sources...

Articles
You create and/or update these webpages in the Articles Editor. We have a number of help items to get you started. If you have basic computer skills and can create a Word document, you can learn to create Joomla Articles. Like Word, the editor in Joomla has buttons to select text size, color, create links, add images, etc.

Components
Some webpages are created by Joomla Components listed on the Components menu. Contact forms and weblinks pages are possible examples. Each site is different depending on which Components have been added to the site.

VirtueMart, the most popular Joomla shopping cart is also a Component. You create and update these items directly in VirtueMart and VirtueMart then displays the content on the site.

Modules
Content can also be created through Joomla Modules. Modules can insert content into specific places on the website, such as in a left column. A Newsflash, Login Box, or Who's Online are examples. Modules might also insert multimedia content, such as image slide shows, into to a webpage.

Plugins
Plugins are another type of Joomla addon that can do a variety of tasks. Some are content related in that they insert pre-defined content into pages.

In Joomla v1.0 plugins are called mambots.

In the message above about Joomla v1.0, the styling for the text, including the lightbulb, text style, and background decoration was inserted by a plugin. All we had to do was wrap the text in beginning and end tags that the plugin recognized.

The Sky is the Limit
The possibilities are almost endless because with about 5,000 available extensions (add-ons) to Joomla you can pretty much do anything on a website you can think of if you are creative and have either technical expertise or a good webmaster.

Our Goals
The help files on designJoomla.com are mostly focused on helping non-technical people learn how to update their own website Articles and do other tasks that don't require a lot of technical expertise. Although primarily aimed at our customers, we welcome all visitors from around the world and enjoy meeting new friends as part of the worldwide Joomla family.

How We Work
Joomla is a great way to create a profitable and successful website on a modest budget. We design the website to the customer's specifications and do the technical work. The site owner logs in and updates whatever content they are able to do. The goal of this team approach is to create a successful website that meets the expectations of the site owner, whether it be about art, ecommerce, services or whatever.
