How The Joomla Menu System Works

The menu system in Joomla is how someone navigates your website because your website menus have links to all the pages on your website.

For a complete guide on how to add menus and menu items see Joomla's Guide to Menu Management.

Menus in Joomla contain the links to the pages and features on your website. These can be links to Articles (webpages), Components (such as VirtueMart product categories), or many other types of links.

The basic Joomla package includes a few menus already setup. You can add more as needed. If your Joomla website was designed or setup by someone else, you might have different menus than those shown on the left.

A menu contains the information about the links but not the style of how the menu will be displayed. The style is usually set in your Joomla template or by a Joomla menu extension that styles the menu it is assigned to.

The Menu Manager has a list of the menus on your website. You can add more or delete menus you don't want by clicking on the Menu Manager dropdown. The Help button in the Menu Manager screen has useful information on adding menus.
