How To Sort Articles & Content Items in Joomla

Joomla Free Help Center - Organizing Your Site

Version Info this help item shows Joomla v1.5 but is similar in v1.0

Help Tip In Joomla 1.5, webpages are called Articles, in Joomla 1.0, webpages are called Content Items. If you are using Joomla 1.0 substitute "Content Item" for "Article".

Sorting a Menu Created List
Some menu items in Joomla will display a list of Articles. If the list is not in the order you want, you can rearrange the list to suit your needs. The list order is usually determined by two elements:

  • How the menu link is configured

    and sometimes...

  • How the Article list is ordered.

First, find the menu item that is causing the mis-ordered list. This will probably be a menu on the menus drop down.

  • Open the menu and double click on the menu item to see what ordering it uses.
  • If it is creating a list of Articles it will be either a Section > Section Layout or a Category > Category List Layout.
  • Under Parameters (Advanced) select the options for "Order" and "Article Order".

  • If none of the options give you the right order and you want to manually sort the order, choose "Order" for both dropdown boxes.
  • Click Save.
  • You can click the large Help button to learn more about all the menu options.

Manually Sorting Articles

  • Now go to Content > Article Manager.

  • Filter the list of articles by section and/or category using the drop down filter boxes.

  • Reorder the Articles by either
    • Tying in new numbers in the "Order" boxes and then clicking the icon next to "Order".
      or
    • Using the up/down arrows in the Order Column.

Your menu item should now display the way you sorted it.
