To update or add a VirtueMart category go to Components > VirtueMart. Then click on Products > List Categories on the VirtueMart menu. This opens the "Category Tree" page. VirtueMart v1.1 is shown - earlier versions may have a horizontal admin menu bar:

• Click on the "New" button to create a new VirtueMart category. This opens up a New Category window:
  
  
  
• Category Name: a unique name for this category.
• Category Description: optional description that will appear above the thumbnails for this category as on this site:
  
  
  
• Parent: the default is top level, meaning your category will display thumbnails of items for sale as in the example above. But you can also make another category the parent which creates a sub-group of items that will display when the parent category is clicked. In the example below, the parent category is called Show Models Available. There are no cart items directly in Show Models Available but there are two sub-categories. The visitor then clicks on one of the sub-categories to see the available items.
  
  
  
• Show x products per row: How many thumbnails will display per row. This is usually limited by your site design. If you use Firefox be sure to check your site in Internet Explorer because sometimes the maximum number of images per row is different.
• Category Browse Page: Use the drop down to select name of the template used to display the browse page which is often a thumbnail page. Sometimes a new browse template needs to be created for a new category. Browse pages can show the category in many ways besides thumbnail galleries (such as lists) and can include Add To Cart buttons as well.
  
• Category Detail Page (Flypage): Use the drop down to select name of the template used to display the detail page. Sometimes a new detail template needs to be created for a new category. When a thumbnail is clicked on the browse page, it opens the detail page for the item. This usually contains a larger image, more information about the item, options, and an Add To Cart button.
• Images: Click on the Images tab to upload a category image. Just like cart items, categories can use a representitive image as in the example above for Show Models Available where both sub-categories have a thumbnail image. You don't need to bother with this unless your site can display more than one category at once. Even if you need a category image, you probably just need the thumbnail. If you just have large images you can upload the "full image" and use "Auto-Create Thumbnail" feature.
  
  
  
• Save: click on the big "Save" button to save the new category.

• To update information in a VirtueMart category, double click on the category name on the Category Tree page.
• Edit any existing description for that category and make any other changes.
• Then click on the "Images" tab to add, remove or change the main image used for that category.
• Save: click on the big "Save" button to save the new category.
